CHART WATCH

SEE THE PICTURE AND TELL THE STORY
EXERCISE- 1
This is an exercise you might have learnt in kindergarten. I am introducing the same concept for a different output. Charts are Graphical representation of price movement of anything over a period of time. The trend depicted by these charts is governed by the forces of demand and supply.  ‘History Repeats’ is a dictum that is operative in the markets also. Markets include all kinds, such as Stock, Commodity, Crude, Metals, and Foreign exchange etc.
Observe the three charts carefully and try to predict which way the price movement is likely in the forthcoming weeks. At this point of time it is purely a geuss work. Let me see how many of you are good at this kind of prediction based on the picture. The representative charts are from Indian Stock Market.

About the charts:
  1. Nifty – The number used is the collective price movement of many stocks in National stock Exchange. It actually represents the emotions of millions of people operating in those stocks.
  2. City Union Bank – It is a small bank stock from south India.
  3. Electrotherm (I) - It is an Engineering Company.

    1.NIFTY - WEEKLY

2. CITY UNION BANK - WEEKLY

     3. ELECTROTHERM (I) -WEEKLY

YOU WILL LEARN MORE ABOUT CHARTS LATER.

The Art Of Money Management For A Novice

Chapter 1.  The Concept Of  Nano Investment

The outflow must not be in excess
No matter how small income is.
                                                   Thirukkural - Verse 478

Present  Scenario:

“Sir! Every one of us is running at a fast phase from morning to night for the sake of fulfilling our job requirements as if chased by a mad dog from behind.  We come back home late at night only to take some rest. Once again we get up early next day and start running again! This routine sometimes gets extended to Saturdays and Sundays. Most of the time it is very difficult to think about ourselves, leave alone investments”. – This is the type of conversation I come across among the modern youngsters.
In spite of earning, these youngsters are not able to build a substantial asset due lack of planning. A proper time management in their day to day life may help them to plan their investments as well as to improve the quality of their life. At present they neither spend some quality time with their family nor do they have an executable blue print which can make them multi millionaires of the future. Money is like a living organism. If you provide a proper environment it will grow much beyond your imagination. Otherwise it will vanish into thin air. Basically I do not like to switch my investment proposition quite often, mainly due to laziness. But I would like to provide a secured environment for my money to grow on its own. Let me share some of my concepts with you. We have to find the money first to make it grow. Hence the following concept.

The Nano concept:

Many of us think that investments are meant for rich people and it requires lot of money. It is not true. Getting the concept of ‘Savings and Investment’ imbibed in our mind is of utmost importance. The word “Nano” means “extremely small”. We can hypothetically consider money less than ten rupees as a “Nano” amount. Take a small box and start placing few rupee coins every day and tag the box as ‘Nano Khazana’. You consider the coins placed in that as part of the expenditure for that day. Now literally your Nano investment has started.

Where to Find the Extra Money?

Let us examine ways and means to find extra money to fill in that ‘Nano Khazana’ as well as to find a proper environment for the money to grow. We will be discussing this in detail in the forthcoming chapter.

The Art Of Money Management For A Novice

Prologue :
“Amassing great wealth is gradual, like the gathering of a theater Crowd.
Its dispersal is sudden, like that same crowd departing”
                                                                                 Thirukkural - Verse 332

Inflation
Majority of human beings race throughout their life in search of money. But most of them never pay any attention to invest a portion of their hard earned money in the right place so that their money will swim and grow faster against the inflationary current. I started my academic career after obtaining a post graduate qualification in the year 1974 with a salary of Rs.562/-. This amount was adequate to run a family for a month. But now if you go to a good restaurant in Chennai with your wife and a child for evening refreshment the bill will be equivalent to the total monthly salary of 1974. This is the manifestation of inflation which will eat away the worth of your cash wealth silently.
Education
Similar disturbing trend is also seen in the educational sector. The total amount of money I might have spent for my entire education between 1956 to 1973 was less than three thousand rupees. But now you have to spend that much of amount for one term for your kid doing LKG in a moderate private school. For a professional education in a moderate institution you have to spend few lacs now. What is going to be the situation after thirty years from now?

Ailments
The third worrying factor is the medical bills. We should pray God every day to give us best health possible and to keep us away from chain hospitals permanently. But people living in cities cannot even dream of such bliss. Every day an unknown virus is entering the city without visa and passport and surprises even the medical professionals. Eating out and constantly moving in the crowd has become the order of the day and it ensures your ill-health. More than that people are exposed to more occupational hazards resulting in new type of ailments. You will be surprised to know that an increasing number of patients in hospitals are in the age group of late twenties and early thirties. Every time you encounter any ailment the minimum unexpected expenditure will be around five hundred to thousand rupees. If you enter in to a hospital the bill runs into several thousand rupees. You should always be prepared for such unforeseen expenditure and should keep either the required money as reserve or you should have adequate medical insurance. If you take insurance you should be lucky enough to have your ailment already covered under the insurance scheme. Otherwise you should be prepared for a long drawn battle with the insurance company. Ultimately you will end up with the self realization that nothing can replace the supremacy of the hard cash in your bank account.
HOME
It is everybody’s dream to own a Home of their own. But the price of real-estate is permanently moving upwards. It is an investment that will never let you down, but it has its own drawbacks. For making this investment you first  have to earn lot of money.
Marriage of your Children and  Retirement
This is another nightmare. From the marriage hall rent to catering – everything is skyrocketing. Usually it coincides with most people’s retirement. If you spend all your retirement benefits in the marriage of your children then it will become extremely difficult to have a comfortable old age.
For all the above mentioned expenditures you have to make an in-depth planning and formulate a strategy so that you tide over each milestone smoothly with ease. Only proper savings and investments can outsmart the inflationary pressure. Thriftiness and savings should be given top priority in life.

Where to save money safely? We will be discussing in detail in the forthcoming chapters.
